FOOL in the House
Six house concerts in two neighborhoods featuring 18 artists. All shows start at 7:30 p.m., and have a suggested donation of $15.
Thursday, October 22
| Clinton St. | Featuring Lynda Howes, Ann McDougall, and Evalyn Parry | Lynda Howes is a lover of the world's epics, myths, and long stories, she brings her version of Gilgamesh. Ann McDougall likes to experiment with visual media and loves to tell stories that have wandered in from strange places. Darkness 5 is a collection of 5 interwoven stories about 5 different kinds of darkness. Singer / Songwriter Evalyn Parry sings and tells stories of the history bicycles, bloomers, and the first woman to ride around the world on two wheels. |
| Markham St. | Featuring Ivan Coyote, Dov Mikelson with Tim Machin, and Rick Oginz | Ivan Coyote will be telling from her repertoire of true life stories of travel, people she has met and stories shared. Dov Mikelson with Tim Machin perform a piece inspired by the juicy bits and pieces of the darker tales of the Brothers Grimm and the music of Tom Waits. “A knock at the door. Two vagabonds arrive and tell a delicious tale of murder and woe with the guests that have gathered 'round. Sharing their darkest secrets through the power of their words and songs; no one will ever be the same again.” Rick Oginz is a sculptor, print-maker, jewelry designer, and painter. In 2006 after 30 years in Los Angeles, he relocated to Toronto. “Rick sculpts, carves, and casts words as vividly as he works with wood, bronze, and paint.” (Dan Yashinsky) |
| Palmerston St. | Featuring Karen Richardson, Naomi Steinberg, and Sarah Machin Gale | Karen Richardson weaves a web with spoken word and poetry. Naomi Steinberg believes strongly in the power of stories to catalyze and support change both personally and globally. Sarah Machin Gale who will be be performing the Rutabaga Stories — a fanciful trip into a bygone era, using voice, movement and gesture — be transported from the land where 'things are always the same as they always were' to the village of cream puffs and beyond. |

| Arlington Ave. | Featuring Lillian Allen, Calogero (Charly) Chiarelli, and Ginette Mohr | Lillian Allen is a Juno-award winning poet and performer, she is known internationally as a pioneer of dub poetry. FOOL – festival of oral literatures has commissioned Calogero’s adaptation of two stories from Boccaccio’s Decameron, which he has re-imagined in Hamilton’s north end. Ginette Mohr will be performing her highly acclaimed show, FishFace. An orphaned fisherman’s daughter finds herself drawn into a battle to save the ocean from evil forces. A fantasy for all ages! |
| Wellwood Ave. | Featuring Ivan Coyote, Carol Leigh Wehking and Glenna Janzen, and Celia McBride | Ivan Coyote will be telling from her repertoire of true life stories of travel, people she has met and stories shared. Their tandem telling takes two voices and weaves them together into a unique and vibrant performance. Carol Leigh and Glenna Janzen have performed on three continents and are delighted to bring The Snow Queen to the first FOOL Festival. Celia McBride will be performing her story, The Up. “Once upon a time there was a little girl with a fiery temper and a wandering spirit...” A story about navigating the downs and the ups of a mystical journey. |
| TBA | Featuring Dan Yashinsky with Brian Katz, and Regina Machado | Dan Yashinsky with Brian Katz will perform Talking You In – a canta storia they have toured to Holland, Wales, the National Arts Centre, and the Hospital for Sick Children. Regina will tell from her large repetoire of true life stories and Brazillian Folk Tales. |

This session is an experiment in creating a new myth. Bring your personal stories of the most extraordinary experiences you’ve had as listeners, and we’ll conjure a new (or perhaps very old) medicine spirit called Listener. Dan Yashinsky received a Chalmers Arts Fellowship to explore how we listen to oral stories. The stories told at The Listener’s Tale will be recorded (with permission from participants) for his project archives.
